Biology Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UNRI: Receives a Visit from Jikalahari to Explore Environmental Cooperation

The role of environmental NGOs in overseeing development processes in Indonesia has become increasingly prominent over the past two decades, including in Riau Province. In this region, various environmental organizations play an active role in critiquing government policies and monitoring corporate practices, particularly those operating in the land-based and natural resource sectors. One prominent example is Jikalahari, a consortium of environmental NGOs known for its advocacy and oversight of ecological issues in Riau.

On December 1, 2025, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), specifically the Biology Department, welcomed the Jikalahari Coordinator and his team to explore collaboration opportunities. This meeting was warmly welcomed, reflecting the commitment of the Biology Department, which has achieved Excellence status, to continuously strengthen its academic contributions and community service in the environmental field.

Through this meeting, both parties discussed potential collaborations, ranging from environmental research and conservation education to biology-based empowerment programs. The Biology Department, FMIPA, UNRI, views the synergy with Jikalahari as a strategic step to expand its academic and social impact in maintaining environmental sustainability in Riau.

This collaboration is expected to be the beginning of productive and sustainable collaboration, and to strengthen the role of higher education institutions in supporting environmental conservation efforts at the regional and national levels.
